Cellostone Suite |
A solo for bass clarinet, this work is capricious in nature with a loose form. It begins in a mournful state. This evolves into a complex duet between descending melody and ascending accompaniment figures before joining together in agitated trills and chromatic runs. The opening mourning returns, but this time it goes into an expansive arpeggiated motif. The piece ends with an angry cadenza, followed by the final return of the beginning that fades away into the distance.
The second piece in a collection of works for solo instruments, Recitative No. 2 begins with wide, peaceful intervals reminiscent of a dream-like, lullaby. This motif repeats and slowly turns from a peaceful slumber into an agitated, vicious monster. A sudden change moves the recitative from free-form to an off-kilter quasi-waltz. This waltz eventually cascades into a battle between the agitated nightmare and the opening lullaby, with the lullaby winning out to bring the listener back home.
