VOICE/HARP/FUJARA
This is a set of three meditations based on poems written by my sister, Maggie Gray. I wanted to create something special for her 30th birthday that would reflect her time spent out in the desert working, camping, and stargazing. She requested I do something with harp, and then I decided to also throw in fujara part, a traditional folk fipple flute from Slovakia, because it is one of her favorite instruments and part of our family heritage. For performance practices, the fujara part could be performed on an alto or bass flute. The first movement captures daytime, or the first entrance into the desert complete with the excitement and happiness of the moment. The middle movement depicts a moment when an old mother sagebrush was destroyed in a fire, bruising the landscape but leading to regrowth. The final movement captures the calm, peaceful moments of "Cowboy Camping," or sleeping under the open sky.
